Introduction
I didn’t plan to write this book. I planned to get around to writing it. There’s a difference, and for most of my life that difference ruled me. I used to carry ideas the way some people carry stones in their pockets—weighty, distracting, and oddly comforting in their familiarity. Every year I’d add another, promising myself that one day I’d finally set them down and build something with them. But days blurred into seasons, and seasons into years, and I kept waiting for some perfect convergence of clarity, bravery, time, or maybe divine intervention. Whatever it was, it never arrived. What arrived instead were more stones, more ideas, and more hesitation disguised as preparation. And if I’m honest, I grew good at dressing my avoidance in respectable clothes. I could make hesitation look like thoughtfulness, disguise doubt as realism, and call delay a form of care. It all sounded so reasonable that even I believed it.
